The Holbrook – Nichols Achievement Award was established by the Holbrook & Nichols, Inc. of Lake Toxaway to reward effort and determination and to encourage continued achievement by students who have demonstrated an aptitude for the construction, drafting, masonry, or mechanical technology trades. Recipients may use the award to pursue further vocational education or opportunities, with a preference given to those students who will continue to develop skills in their chosen trade. The Holbrook-Nichols Achievement Award is a component of the Transylvania Endowment's Excellence in Education program

One award is available to a Transylvania County public high school senior who has demonstrated achievement and potential in construction, drafting, masonry or mechanical technology.
The Community Foundation scholarships will be awarded without regard to age, race, national origin, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, political affiliation, religious belief, or any other characteristic protected by law.
- Effort, determination and accomplishment in the chosen trade
- Special achievements and/or recognition in the chosen trade
- Work experience (including job shadowing, apprenticeship, and/or cooperative education in the chosen trade)
- Preference for students who are furthering their construction-related knowledge at an accredited educational institution and/or pursuing journeyman certification through the work-study program with the North Carolina Department of Labor
