We Build Day Camp for Girls Funded

Rutherford Housing Partnership was awarded $10,000 to fund the first year of a week-long day camp to introduce construction skills and trades to girls in grades 4-6. Participants will build community projects – maybe a porch for an RHP client and/or community garden boxes – using power tools. They will also build a stool and flower boxes to take home. Plans call for demonstrations from water department workers, welders and electricians, using as many tradeswomen as possible. The program developed when RHP vounteers, the Women Roofers, were recognized by “Returning the Favor,” and were given, a chance to work with GAF roofing materials company. GAF offered to send trainers, and the women opened up that training to all high school construction students in Rutherford and Polk counties. The camp will build confidence and possible interest in a career in the trades or advanced study in math and science.
