LEAF Community Arts awarded $2,000
LEAF Community Arts was awarded a grant to support its Buncombe County Partners in Education program in Black Mountain and Swannanoa Valley schools. LEAF in partnership with the Buncombe County Schools (BCS), has been selected as a Partners in Education program recipient by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. This program is designed to assist arts organizations with educational and platform resources to develop educational partnerships with local school systems. LEAF and BCS have developed a program running 2018-2020. This collaborative program provides art and culture focused professional development opportunities for BCS K-12 teachers. Using LEAF's teaching artist model, BCS teachers will learn unique ways to incorporate diverse world art forms into their classrooms.
Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity - $10,000 for home repairs that address health, safety and accessibility issues.
Black Mountain Center for the Arts - $4,000 to provide art programs to people with dementia.
Black Mountain Counseling Center - $10,000 to provide mental health services to low-income people.
Black Mountain Primary School - $2,310 for picnic tables and landscaping.
Bounty & Soul - $10,000 to establish a farmer’s outreach program.
Charles D. Owen Middle School - $7,500 to remodel the cafeteria.
Food Connection - $5,400 for supplies and a driver for food distribution.
LEAF Community Arts - $2,000 for a training program designed to help teachers integrate art in their curricula.
Meals on Wheels of Asheville and Buncombe County - $10,000 for food for meals for home-bound seniors.
NC MedAssist - $2,500 for a free pharmacy program for low-income patients.
The Old Depot Association - $2,590 to purchases benches and promotional material.
Swannanoa Valley Child Care Council/Children and Friends Enrichment Center - $550 to purchase educational toys.
Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry - $10,000 for utility assistance for low-income people.
United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County - $10,000 to support its middle school initiative at Owen Middle School.
Verner Center for Early Learning - $5,000 to install a controlled access front door.
Western North Carolina Lions/Marjorie McCune Memorial Center - $5,000 to provide medical care for blind, frail or elderly veterans and disabled residents.
YMCA of Western North Carolina - $4,000 to provide life-saving water safety skills to children.
